Fun Fact The final inspection included BBQ.

Some people design their homes around the kitchen. This one was designed around the BBQ. The goal for this renovation was to create a space that felt connected to the outdoors and worked just as well for a quiet weeknight dinner as it did for a full backyard gathering. A big part of that meant blurring the line between inside and out.

The renovation included a large covered extension designed to match the original roofline and architecture of the home, right down to the red metal roof that gave the project its name. Oversized sliding doors open directly onto the covered deck, creating an easy flow between the dining area, outdoor kitchen, and backyard. Integrated heaters, pot lights, and a custom cedar ceiling make the space comfortable year-round, while the outdoor kitchen was built around the homeowner’s love of cooking and entertaining.

A lot of the project was custom built on-site, including the outdoor cabinetry and cast-in-place concrete countertops. The result feels warm, durable, and lived in rather than overly polished. It’s the kind of space that naturally pulls people outside and keeps them there long after dinner. In fact, once the project wrapped up, the homeowners called us back to build a sauna and continue evolving the outdoor space. We’ll happily come back for projects like that, especially if there’s BBQ involved.
